Compulsory Registration

All primary and secondary teachers in Queensland are required to be registered for their profession with the Queensland College of Teachers, a statutory authority which oversees all teachers. Qualifications are assessed by QCT to ascertain whether Queensland standards have been met in teacher education and continuing professional development of teachers is encouraged. The QCT also ensures that no unsound teachers are allowed to work in Queensland Schools by conducting compulsory criminal history checks on all registration applicants.

School Year

The Queensland academic year consists of two semesters, further divided into four terms which are in turn divided by short holiday breaks. Most independent schools enjoy about 12 weeks' holiday per year. Teachers are not required at school for the majority of this holiday time, except compulsory professional development sessions conducted by many schools on student-free days before the commencement of each term.

  • Term 1 - late January to Easter (March/April)
  • Term 2 - March/April to June
  • Term 3 - July to September
  • Term 4 - September to early/mid December

Year Levels

Students in Queensland are expected to attend schooling from the age of 6 to 15. Early Childhood teachers work with pre-school aged children and students in years 1, 2 and 3 of Primary school. Primary teachers work across the year levels of 1 to 7 (ages 6 to 12) and Secondary teachers work with students in particular subject areas with students from years 8 to 12 (ages 13 to 17). Compulsory schooling ends at age 16 or year 10; however Queensland has a very high retention rate of students completing year 12. Post-secondary options include entering tertiary study at University or TAFE colleges or alternatively entering directly into the workforce.

Overseas-Trained Teachers

Teachers who have qualified outside Australia and are residing overseas, must obtain the correct permission from the Department of Immigration, Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs in order to come to Australia with the correct documentation to work. Their website is listed below and is a very good contact point regarding visiting rights, work visas, temporary residency and citizenship. Teacher Appointments is unable to assist overseas teachers in obtaining work until they have obtained the necessary right to work in Australia. In addition, Australian Schools have been reluctant to sponsor overseas teachers in the past, so this option should not be relied upon.
